Laws for Cyclists |
•Helmets: Are mandatory for anyone
under the age of 18. It is recommend for everyone to wear a helmet when
riding. There are many styles of helmets available and some styles are
more suited to specific riding styles. Always choose an appropriate helmet
for the activity. |
| •It is illegal to ride against traffic.
Always ride with the flow of Traffic. |
| •Cyclists are legally required to
yield to traffic before entering the travel lane. |
| •In the Highway Traffic Act, section
146 (2) cyclists should ride as close to the right hand curb or edge of
roadway that is practical. |
| •You must obey the traffic signs and
lane markings if you are going to travel by road. |
| •It is Illegal to pass a motor vehicle
on the right side. |
| •If you are riding at night you need
a front mounted head lamp. You can be ticketed for riding without a light
a night. Also remember to wear something reflective, or a flashing light
on the back of your bike so that other vehicles on the road can see you. |
| •When using the River Valley Trails,
or any shared trail, remember to warn pedestrians that you are approaching
from behind. A bell or vocal warning will do. |
